Spring Landscape Tips:
Getting your lawn ready for the Spring and Summer seasons doesn’t have to be a difficult job.
Do you want a healthy lawn? Do you want to avoid killing and pulling weeds all summer long?
Let’s get ahead of the game this Spring.
1. Check your irrigation system for:
Proper operation and spray pattern
2. To prevent the establishment of weeds, apply pre-emergent:
The ideal time to apply pre-emergent herbicides is when soil temperatures consistently reach 55 degrees at a depth of 4 inches
Split your pre-emergent application into two rounds applied between February and April
3. Aeration and dethatch your lawn in the Spring and Fall if needed
Thatch is that layer of dead roots, leaves, and organic matter which develops in your turf over time.
Your lawn feeds mostly through its roots. Having too much thatch can reduce the ability for water and nutrients to reach the roots for uptake.
Also, this area can harbor disease and make applications for grubs and insects ineffective
4. Weed control
Apply broadleaf weed spray that has 2,4-D to control non-grassy weeds such as dandelions, chickweed, clover, and many others.
Apply high-quality, mostly nitrogen (which is the 1st number on the fertilizer bag) lawn fertilizer containing up to half slow-release nitrogen.
5. Mowing & Watering
Water regularly to soak the fertilizer into the root zone of the lawn.
Mow frequently to remove seedheads from winter grassy weeds such as ryegrass and rescue grass.
